Hobart, the First City in Australia to Ban ALL Single Use Plastics
6th Jul 2021
In a nation-wide first, Hobart City Coucil is the first capital city in Australia to ban all single-use plastic food packaging! From 1 July 2021 reusable or compostable packaging alternatives will be required for all single-use plastic containers smaller than 1-litre capacity.
There are a range of certified compostable packaging, including PLA bioplastic linings for cups and cutlery, that are acceptable alternatives. In an even bigger and better step forward, Hobart City Council is accepting all organic materials, including compostable packaging in the residential Food Organics and Garden Organics bin - so customers can compost food packaging at home in their green bin.
Switching to compostable packaging is a simple move that can result in big differences. By choosing BioPak products, an average cafe can eliminate 2 tonnes of plastic waste and offset 6 tonnes of carbon emissions. Additionally, in places like Hobart, customers can compost their food packaging at home.
